Reflection

  1. How Different is the writing style for online news from the writing styles for print and broadcast news?

-In online news you have to be creative in the formatting and the construction because online reader’s behaviors differ from those of printed news readers, so we must consider putting the most crucial of information in parts that will be most visible and most read. The multimedia capabilities of online news as well should be utilized strategically to enhance the quality of the article, also the usage of this possibility is one of the defining differences of broadcast and writing because in writing, the only media used are photographs. Also the spacing and the breaking habits in writing should be observed as the readers tend to rest their eyes at points like that, the article should also be as concise as it is informative to retain interest of the readers accessing the online news.

         2. What challenges did you encounter in adapting your print news story to the online format? How did you resolve these challenges

-At first I was confused because I thought that copying, pasting and a little tweaking would be enough but I really thought wrong because it was a little different than what I had expected because I had to put more time for the conceptualization and was pressured from the beginning up to now, I do not know if I did okay, but regardless I am thankful that I was able to finish and I hope I can satisfy a bit. I resolved these challenges through my sheer will to finish what I had started, I also tried a format very similar of those of rappler’s so I am pretty confident with my format, however I cannot say the same with my content because honest to God, this is my first time writing an article for an online news and that really is the part where I am insecure. As this semester is coming to a close I hope that I could’ve picked up a thing or two which I know I would, but moreover, I would like to improve in fields stated in the devcom series, I look forward for more activities and exercises such as this.

“Head above the clouds”

The seminar was revolving around the science technology and society obviously. Science had impacts on our society and we wouldn’t have any idea about this if we hadn’t attended the seminar about it, I wouldn’t have had known about the Philippines’ satellites diwata 1 and diwata 2. There are also contributions of our country’s astronauts and scientist to NASA and I only knew about it at the seminar. In general, it was very informative and concisely explained, and was very compacted with a lot of people in accordance to the overflow of information to be presented.

It was quite a nice idea to overflow the event and to have a rather decent venue but the only problem about that was it was so sleep inducing and the people had to battle with their constant call to sleep just because of the comfort that the venue provided but in contrary to this, if the place would’ve been uncomfortable the speakers would not have been listened to since the students would only focus to ventilate themselves and think about how uncomfortable the place is.

In conclusion, the seminar was very comfortable and very informative so it was very excellent and very recommended for people that are wondering what the science and technology’s connection with today’s society. I would like to thank the speakers and the event for opening my eyes upon the topics presented, in terms of space and other inventions.

“Travelling the world in 2hours”

The event of AIESEC entitled: “Wonder to Wander” brought about new information and new experiences that are available for us if we engaged with other cultures that are from other countries but was made available for us during the said event. The booths also offered delicacies that are either related or directly involved in the making of the local cuisine at each country. The origins and etymologies of some terms were also provided and thoroughly explained which proved crucial and important in our daily venture in life.

We “wonder to wander” a phrase so simple yet so inexplicably long to explain, we as humans tend to have the curiosity of travelling from place to place but somehow lack the means to do so as we lack opportunities. The org’s main objective is to provide means and ways of travel for the students that desire to engage in transport to other countries to contribute in today’s society. It was rather fascinating, knowing that the advancements don’t only stop there, but the knowledge continues to prosper locally in our country.

To compensate for the lack of experience that the students are experiencing, this organization now has brought the experience to the students and have made the audience have an in-depth feeling immersing themselves to the culture of the different countries. This knowledge will serve a great purpose in the near future since we are venturing in a vast and diverse world in which we have to have sufficient knowledge about different cultures for us to know how to appropriate ourselves to begin a conversation with other people and to know whether or not to do something and gesture something to the opposite party without the fear of offending them.

“Development in all Areas”

Change is the only thing constant, a tad bit cliché statement but a rather true one since it is very observable in our surroundings today that there is no such thing as permanence and consistency. Everything evolves, everything changes. From the first points of time there were already vast amounts of changes, to put everything in order, let us see this in the perspective and view of the agricultural field just as it was explained at the seminar.

The agricultural history can be classified into points, one of which is the early archipelagic period in which it is explained that the native people had a stable and productive yield in every aspect of the agricultural field of the country, and during this 16th century venture it was a rather promising period, before changing for the worse by our succumbing to the colonizers’ power.

During the Colonial period of Spanish and USA it can be seen as an improvement by only looking at the numbers, but when we dig deeper on who it benefits, that’s when the real argument starts since all the lands belonged to the king of Spain and during the USA colonization period all the untouched lands were mined and was harvested which made a large impact to the present.

This history explains a lot about what is going on inside the agricultural field, of what happen and what is going to happen. The rather interesting part of this piece is that sometimes in history we tend to overlook what happened in different fields, we only focused on the bigger subjects that we forget to observe and reflect on what happened to the small aspects such as the field of agriculture.

“Lagindab” -Play

“Beyond Conspiracy: 25 years after the Aquino Assassination”

The documentaryof the Ninoy Aquino assassination is still one of the largest murder cases withan unknown mastermind, it was conspired to be Ferdinand Marcos since he was theone being opposed by Senator Ninoy Aquino, but what really happened?

The autopsy reports of the trajectory of the bullet which entered the skull was shown to have an origin from right above the position of the senator and at the time only the military personnel guarding him were the ones surrounding him and it was shown that a man from the same level of ground could have pointed the gun at a very awkward angle and was unlikely to be carried out in success. In addition to this the dispatched personnel were counted to be at more than a thousand which was more than enough to guard him from a possible assailant but since the real enemies were shown to be the military people themselves guarding him.

The officials involved in the murder were tight lipped about what happened and chose to have their lives locked away behind bars rather than just leaking what they know to put an end to this. The president even meddled with the case, this showed the bias, dictatorship and true cowardice of Ferdinand Marcos, as he (probably) ordered the murder of his opposition and then ordered the court ruling to be in favor of him. A true control and dictatorship, a true puppeteer, his corruption was blatantly shown but still he was not prosecuted.

After watching the documentary it was rather clear that the parts were connecting together, since the assassin was part of the military and during the time of Aquino’s arrival to the country was under the rule of martial law and the military was under the command of the President so all evidences point to Marcos being the mastermind. But of course this is all just under my speculations and based on what I know and watched.

“A call to serve the community”

“Bukambibig”

A single organism can go as far as we can think of, now imagine a whole organization of organisms going hand in hand to tackle any sort of challenge that may come their way and achieve goals that can only be dreamt by some. The community broadcasters of UPLB have since been implementing services that are for the public good, they have come a long way from being just an organizations with such goals and they have now realized their goals and are still moving forward for the betterment of the society.

The sectors that were presented during this symposium was the academe, the agricultural sector and the religious sector. All of them have been tackled with excellence and have since been served by the people that are handling the Community Broadcasters of not just in UPLB but in all of UP and around its vicinity.

The effectiveness of the community broadcasters’ movement is astounding as it is really effective and is very helpful to the society, I hope there would be organizations such as this in the future or just letting this already existing organization advance in its own way.

“The undiscovered deep blue”

“Mission Blue”

Only one percent of the wonders of the ocean have been discovered, we’ve only invaded the surface of this dark blue depth of the ocean but what’s scary is that upon discovering means to dive in depths unimaginable we still had something identifiable to be trash to us that is sitting peacefully at the bottom of the ocean and this proves our carelessness about the environment.

Never have I thought that I would someday be as concerned in the ocean as I am today, I also never have thought that this is the state of filth that the ocean is facing. The documentary about the life and experiences of Sylvia Earle explained the importance of the ocean not just in our environment, but also in the ecosystem and the cycle of gasses inside the atmosphere. We’ve not only perversely exploited our lands but our “death touch” have now reached the deep blue as well and the biological life forms of this marine terrains are now facing the wrath of the human race.

I’ve always heard about the sharks being harvested of their fins for food, medicine, and etc of the Chinese people, but little did I know that they have been solely responsible for the extinction of certain shark species and the endangerment of others. Disgusting practices like these are what makes the world go dark, these exploitation of creatures, thinking of them as some kind of resource is what degrades the environment.

It is not the lack of creatures that makes the animals goextinct, but it’s the disciplines that THE “animals” are lacking.

“A Brewing Storm”

A newly announced movement that will supposedly start a revolution against the tyranny of the governing bodies that had multiple plans to be accomplished but was ultimately thwarted by the unfair circumstances of reality. The story took place at the era before Ferdinand Marcos announced his implementation of the martial law, and the scary unfairness of capitalism/contractualization. The play was so good that I almost forgot that what I was watching was a live performance and not a multimedia video, I applaud the actors for their exquisite acting and unwavering focus despite the audience’s reactions such as laughing or shouting.

I feel like I should recommend this to everyone but then again, the play wasn’t recorded or wasn’t digitally produced so only through stories of the people who watched the play can the others relive what had happened during the performance.

The play was produced and performed at University of the Philippines Los Banos, and I am one of the proud audiences whom experienced the story first hand.
